Name your brand.

Five names against nine real heuristics — short, early in the alphabet, survives being heard once aloud, and actually means something. Rejected candidates are replaced within a bounded search, and we say plainly when a registry cannot be verified.

Insist the domain is free Names whose domain is already registered are discarded before you see them. Only TLDs with a real lookup service can be enforced.

The heuristics

  • Few syllables — Fewer syllables the better. One or two beats a three.
  • Early letter — First letter as close to A as possible — it wins the alphabetical-sort advantage in directories and lists.
  • Radio test — Pass the radio test — heard once aloud, a listener can spell it and find it. No ambiguous homophones, no "is that an F or a PH".
  • Represents the work — Represent what the brand does, at least metaphorically.
  • Ownable spelling — Unique in spelling, ideally — ownable in search results rather than drowned by a common word.
  • Origin story — Some history or meaning tied to the originator or origination is a plus — Nabu itself is the Babylonian god of writing and scribes.
  • Domain — Available as a .com and/or other TLDs.
  • Easy to type — Easy to type on a keyboard — the easier the better. No punctuation, no numerals, no accents.
  • Travels well — Doesn't translate to something bad in another language.

Availability is not clearance. Domain and handle checks are live lookups that can go stale within the hour, and the trademark check finds exact matches only — a name with no exact match can still infringe a similar mark in the same class. Confirm anything you intend to rely on.
